It can be quite astonishing to see the progress of how your life has moved in the past year. Perhaps you’ve lost 15 pounds, started your own business, got married and relocated to Honolulu. Ok, maybe it’s not that extreme (or pleasant, for that matter), but nonetheless, as humans, we often overlook the many meaningful moments we discover due to the frantic and busy nature of our chaotic world. Sometimes, these events may not even be acknowledged. I believe that acknowledging the past, being present in the present, and creating certainty in the future is the first step towards creating a growth mindset perspective.
A growth mindset, according to TedX speaker Carol Dweck in her presentation The Power of Believing You Can Improve says “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.” (Dweck, 2015). Society, it seems, likes to articulate the point that talent arises through a strand of luck, perhaps a genetically inferior trait to the normal man. This point of view can be attributed to numerous factors, such as social media, news outlets, friends and family, that observe success and perhaps label it only as “talent”.
In a growth mindset, being able to recognize that talent is achieved through the countless hours and dedication put in by an individual to sharpen their craft is the real reason he or she is successful in that specific area. Not only recognizing such a fact employs the activation of a growth mindset, but living it is what yields the greatest results. One aspect of this mindset I am currently employing is on the topic of personal development. Although seemingly miniscule on a day-by-day basis, my daily habits that consist of walking 10,000 steps a day, meditating, physically working my body twice a day, and reading 20 pages of personal development has lead to an astonishing total reframe of my perception of the world, and quite honestly, reality.
I believe that starting with at least the thought of obtaining a growth mindset is sufficient enough to where the mind, hopefully, will repeatedly circle the topic of growing as an individual until those thoughts become actions, and those thoughts become reality.
